After a vehicle collision, it’s normal to feel frustrated and overwhelmed. However, the number one thing to remember is to remain calm as best as you can. This is important because you need to think clearly so you can protect your interests and preserve your legal rights. At Hands Law, we highly recommend that you follow the steps below to ensure that you protect your interests and preserve your legal rights.
- Don’t panic. Remember to stay calm after your collision. We can’t stress this enough.
- Do call 911. Call 911 to report the accident to local police and ask for an ambulance (if necessary). If you cannot call, ask someone nearby to call for you.
- Don’t leave the scene of the accident. Wait until help arrives (local or state police) and you’ve exchanged information with the other driver(s) and/or witnesses. This is important because you need to get the accident documented by local law enforcement.
- Do exchange information with the driver and/or other witnesses. Get as much information as you can from the other driver (such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, car insurance, etc.). If any witnesses are present, get contact information of the witness.
- Don’t move your car unless it is necessary to stay safe. Try not to move your car until the police arrive. The police are trained to determine who is at fault by looking at an undisturbed accident scene. However, in some instances you may need to move your car to stay safe. Use your best judgment.
- Do take photos of the accident. Take lots of photos of the damage to both cars, license plates, any injuries, etc. Note the time of the accident and if possible, write down statements regarding what happened from all parties.
- Don’t discuss with the other person’s insurance company. Report the collision as soon as possible to your local police and contact your lawyer. Make sure to talk to your Lawyer before you speak or give statements to any insurance company about the accident.
